Ixtapa- Zihuatanejo is a famous beach destination in the state of Guerrero, located in the Pacific Coast of Mexico. This destination is composed of Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo, Ixtapa is a government planned tourist resort that started in the 1970’s with funds from the Bank of Mexico. Zihuatanejo on the other hand is the fourth largest city of the state of Guerrero and although it is a big tourist destination with amazing views, it has kept its traditional town feel. Both parts have their own charm in different ways, while Ixtapa has big resorts overlooking the ocean, Zihuatanejo has small boutique style hotels surrounding the bay.
I had the opportunity to visit some of the iconic boutique hotels in Zihuatanejo, although some of these are not as famous and well-known they are worth the visit or stay.
Amuleto- A six room boutique hotel located in the hills of Zihuatanejo. The small hotel has stunning views, which are most enjoyed during the evening when you can enjoy the sunset with a nice dinner and a glass of wine. The overall privacy of the hotel makes it perfect for a romantic getaway. The hotel is 100 meters above sea level with no beach access, but you can get to the beach either walking (15-20 min) or with a taxi (5 minutes) The restaurant is open to the public but reservations are required as the number of guests is limited.
Viceroy- This 46 room hotel is on Playa la Ropa in the middle of the bay. Viceroy is perfect for families with kids, a trip with close friends and even a romantic getaway. It has three different restaurants and also offers a private dining experience in its famous “cava” or wine cellar with more than 1,000 bottles from the Baja region of Mexico. It is a pet friendly hotel and has an outstanding spa with all types of treatments. If you like to relax in one of the best beaches in Mexico this is the place for you.
La Casa que Canta- This iconic hotel opened its doors 23 years ago earning its place as one of the best hotels in Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo. The hotel has 25 suites and 2 villas, and is located in the hills overlooking the bay. Every room has views to the ocean and some have private pools as well. The hotel has a Clarins certified spa and offers monthly cultural events from classical music concerts to tango and jazz concerts. It does not accept kids so its the perfect place to relax and enjoy with your better half or with a small group of friends.
Zihuatanejo is definitely worth the visit, from amazing beaches and hot weather year round to unique cultural and gastronomical experiences. Please feel free to share your tips and recommendations in this famous beach destination.
