When I heard of Mateo, a new restaurant that mixes dishes from two states in Mexico; Oaxaca (in the south) and Baja California (in the northwest), I thought the mix of flavors had to be extremely interesting and decided to check it out. The restaurant located in the Roma neighborhood in Mexico City has a modern concept and offers a complete Mexican gastronomical experience, transporting you to both states in the country.
When you try out their dishes you can immediately perceive the diversity of flavors and ingredients Mexico offers. While the specialty in Baja California or “Baja” as Americans call it is fish and seafood. Oaxaca on the other hand is well known for its dishes with ingredients such as chocolate, mezcal and grasshoppers. Yes you read that right!
I had lunch in Mateo with a friend and we decided to order a variety of plates to share so we could try more dishes.
For starters, I recommend getting the blue fin tuna tartar, which comes marinated with soy, mango and peppermint sauce or you can also try the chicharrón de pescado which comes with pieces of deep fried fish marinated with a mayonnaise sriracha and pineapple chunks over small corn tortillas. For the main course, although this dish is not Oaxacan or from Baja California, I strongly suggest getting the pappardelle pasta with pesto, sundried tomatos and nuts, this pasta was just oustanding! The lemon chicken with mashed potatoes was also delicious, its one of the best mashed potatoes I have ever tried!
Mateo is the perfect restaurant to enjoy good food with friends in an unpretentious atmosphere, for either lunch or dinner. If you are heading to any of the night clubs near la Cibeles in the Roma neighborhood, Mateo is a great option to visit beforehand and get some of their cocktails or mezcales while enjoying the DJ playing during the weekend.
