There are many restaurants that open every year in the Condesa and Roma neighborhood in Mexico City, the trendiest districts in this metropolis. However, only a few of them will impress and impact you during your first visit. Well, I can definitely say Huset is one of those spots. I walked in not knowing what to expect, I had heard of the restaurant opening and saw pictures of the place in a few Instagram accounts but didn’t know much about Huset at all. From the minute I stepped in I was highly impressed by the rustic decor and the overall ambiance which reflect the overall concept of the restaurant.
Huset which means house in Swedish is not the typical restaurant you find in any big city, in fact its quite the opposite. The whole concept of the restaurant is to transport you to the countryside with a big patio and gravel floor, wooden tables and hanging light bulbs. When you sit down you automatically forget you are in Mexico City, one of the biggest cities in the world.
During my meal experience, everything was spot on. Its hard to state this when you visit a restaurant that has just opened its doors, but this speaks highly of Chef Maycoll Calderón, the Executive Chef and one of the owners. Chef Calderón was born in Venezuela but started his cooking career in Spain. He worked with various renowned chefs such as Ferran Adriá and Jean-Georges before arriving in Mexico City to open the J&G Grill México at the St. Regis Hotel. A few years later, he decided it was time to open his own place and this is how Huset was born.
Huset uses seasonal, fresh ingredients and local products that mimic the harvest season. Chef Calderón doesn’t like to be pretentious with his dishes, he likes simple yet delicious plates. The restaurant has a rooftop where he is planning to grow some herbs and vegetables that are crucial for the dishes. Huset also offers some stylish gin and tonics a wide variety of beers and a variation of cocktails, believe me you are going to love the patio so much you will want to drink more than one. You should try the millers afternoon tonic with guava, my favorite fruit! If you like beer you will love the beer dispensers in the restaurant, don’t forget to check them out!
Although the menu changes constantly, you can’t miss the crab tostada, the avocado pizza, the seared tuna and the the róbalo (seabass) cooked in the wood-fired oven with sweet potato puree on the side. For dessert get plum pie or the guava cheescake, both are outstanding!
If you enjoy having a great meal in an outstanding setting, Huset is the place for you. Make sure you have time to enjoy the outside patio when you visit the restaurant and if you happen to see Chef Calderón say hello, he is worth talking to.
