We’re in April and we residents of the capital are thinking of where to go on Easter week, to get away from it all for a couple of days. Although many will go out on vacation, let’s not forget this is the best season to enjoy great weather and a blossoming capital.
For those of you staying in the city wishing to enjoy the lack of crowds, or those returning fully recharged and seeking new places to know. Here are our suggestions on what to do and where to eat this month at CDMX.
Mango Festival at Azul
If you love mango, don’t miss the festival at Azul restaurants throughout April. Originally from Sri Lanka and India, this fruit was brought to Mexico at the end of the 17th century and became widely harvested until it reached great significance a few years later. Due to the warm weather, this is the best season to enjoy the sweet and acidic flavor of this delicious fruit. At this festival you’ll enjoy a combination of flavors in dishes such as the fish ceviche with mango, cold mango soup, duck breast with mango sauce, and shrimp wrapped in coconut with mango sauce. For dessert, the best options include the mango-stuffed buñuelos, and the caramelized passionfruit pie.
You can enjoy this festival at Azul Condesa, Azul Centro Histórico, Azul y Oro
Gin Gin Steakbar
Gin Gin has become the preferred site to drink many varieties of gin & tonic in Mexico City. A restaurant distinguished for its ambiance, décor and superb beverages. They recently opened a new concept, called Gin Gin Steakbar, on the first floor of its Polanco venue. Upon entering this new space, you’ll feel as if you have arrived at a restaurant in Las Vegas, with an impressive décor in unique details, such as a dinosaur skeleton covering the ceiling, and the DJ booth covered in metal vampire bats.
At the Steakbar, guests can enjoy the traditional gin this place is known for, in addition to innovative champagne cocktails. Regarding food, some of the signature dishes include the mistura carpaccio, a mix of beef, salmon and Portobello slices; the fillet mignon with an exquisite bacon marmalade; the turbot crumble with toasted almonds; and the mac & cheese with a touch of truffle oil. You can’t leave this place without having tried the cookie skillet, a chocolate chip cookie with vanilla ice cream. If you are searching for a hip restaurant with excellent drinks, get to know this concept!
Macelleria
Seeking for a place to satisfy our pasta cravings, we found Macelleria, a restaurant located in the heart of the Roma neighborhood, within an old mansion. This venue brings the taste of Italian homemade to Mexico, with the unique flavor only a nonna (grandma) can provide, within a cozy atmosphere that will make you feel at home, at casa nostra. At Macelleria, guests enjoy handmade dishes, fully respecting the original Italian recipes and ingredients. Our favorites include the vitello tonnato, thin slices of veal with the traditional tuna and capers sauce; the diavola pizza with spicy salami, and the pasta di funghi, homemade pasta with sautéed dried mushrooms. If you work in the area, don’t miss their giorni menu on the weekdays, four courses for $150 pesos.

Colectivo Boca Negra
Colectivo Bocanegra was born as an initiative of that brewery as a tribute to those who spend 70 hours cooking so we guests can enjoy a good time. For this purpose, they approached 40 chefs from Mexico City to share their inspiration, which they turned into unique dishes at each restaurant, paired with Bocanegra beer. Among the best dishes of this collective you’ll find the Wagyu hamburger with Bonito flakes at Soul; the smoked marlin gordita at Lucas Local; crab dobladitas at Jacinta Comedor, and fish raw at Mia Domenica. Throughout April, the brewery will reward the chefs’ work with happenings where they will face what moves them. Don’t miss the following event on Saturday, April 19, at Macellería!

Carlos Pellicer Exhibition
The artist Carlos Pellicer López showcases 39 of his works done in the last fifteen years. The “Encáusticas” exhibition is found within the splendid Indianilla Station Cultural Center, fitted into a cultural area of great scope. Within it you’ll find landscapes and abstract geometric forms created by Pellicer. In the words of the painter: “The one thing all the works have in common is that they all show landscape elements.” Likewise, he stated that some works are based on a geometric composition, a square, an arch, a rectangle, while others show what can be seen through a window as landscape. In this exhibit, guests can see a retrospection of his works from 2002 to the most recent. The exhibition will be open to the public until the month of May.
